2200 State Highway #35 South, Oakhurst, NJ
Map's Mill and Pond/King Ice Houses

Maps' Pond was located along the Whale Pond Brook west of Route 35. Originally, there was a mill blocking the stream and creating the pond.  In the 1800s, when iceboxes were used and in days before refrigeration, ice was cut from local ponds and stored in ice houses. Ice harvesting was an important source of income for farmers in the winter months. The ice house owners bought the ice, stored it over the winter, and sold it months later in the summer.  The King family owned the ice operations and is where King's Highway gets its name. This area today is the area along Whalepond brook, where the Lobster Restaurant and Twin Brook Apartments are located.
