2099 State Highway #35 North, Oakhurst, NJ
Carvel

Carvel, A Local Landmark

By Marjorie Edelson

Written as a tribute to Frank Thomas, a pioneer businessman in Ocean Township who passed away in May 2005.

The year is 1953. Route 35 is a two-lane highway with light traffic and no malls or shopping strips. Across the intersection of West Park Avenue and the highway hangs a single traffic light. On the southwest comer is a golf driving range. On the northwest corner is Mrs. King's small "grocery store" with a single Texaco gas pump out front. The southeast comer where the Towne Shops now stand is heavily wooded with several billboards along the road.. On the northeast comer is a gleaming new Carvel Store with its signature design and a large ice-cream cone sign beckoning customers along the highway.

This landmark building on Route 35 was owned and operated by Frank: and Evelyn Thomas. From its opening, it was a popular attraction. Families young and old, and teenagers on dates flocked to the store for 10 years. Who could resist the soft ice cream swirls, the flying saucers, gooey sundaes, and the ice cream cakes, served cheerfully by Frank and Evelyn and their staff.

In 1963, Frank Thomas moved the store down the highway between Dow and Auth Avenues next to Stewart's Drive-in. It was the beginning age of highway development in Ocean Township and Frank and Evelyn Thomas were pioneers. In 1970, they retired as the state made plans to widen Route 35 to accommodate the booming development. In the 35 years since the highway has become a major commercial artery in the Township and in Monmouth County.

Thanks to Evelyn Thomas for the interview that provided the information for this article

The intersection of Route 35 and West Park Avenue (Called "Dog's Corner" at the time), looking to the northeast. Carvel is on the northeast corner (where the jughandle and restaurant are today). Harry's Bar is farther north along Route 35. Hammernick Farm is the upper part of the photo, what today is the Township of Ocean Pool Complex and the County Park property.

This is the second location the Thomas' had for Carvel, at 1803 State Highway #35.  The location is currently occupied by Scoop's Ice Cream.
